Dardanus megistos is a large, striking marine hermit crab known for its vivid red body covered in white spots. Native to tropical Indo-Pacific reefs, this species is both hardy and aggressive, making it best suited for large, predator-safe aquariums. As an omnivorous scavenger, it plays a role in cleanup but may prey on small invertebrates and fish if not well-fed. Due to its size and temperament, Dardanus megistos should be housed cautiously and provided with ample space, spare shells, and stable rockwork.
Placement:
- Requires a large tank (ideally 75+ gallons) due to its size.
-
Provide:
- Stable live rock structures for climbing and shelter
- Open sandy substrate for movement
- Secure rockwork to prevent collapse when the crab digs or moves large objects.
Feeding:
- Omnivorous scavenger – very opportunistic.
-
Eats:
- Leftover meaty foods (shrimp, fish, clam)
- Algae and detritus
- Prepared foods (pellets, wafers)
- Will hunt small fish and invertebrates if underfed.
Aggression:
- Highly aggressive and territorial.
- Not reef-safe – may attack snails, other hermits, and even fish.
- It is best kept alone or with large, robust tank mates.
- Offer many large spare shells to reduce shell-fighting behaviour.
