Purple Dragon SPS

Purple Dragon SPS is a high-end small polyp stony coral prized for its vivid coloration and branching growth. This designer Acropora morph displays deep purple to violet hues, especially under strong lighting and stable water conditions. When grown out, it becomes a stunning showpiece in any SPS-dominated reef tank.

Known for its vibrant saturation and fine polyp extension, Purple Dragon requires strong lighting and high, turbulent flow to maintain its intense colour and healthy growth. This coral is best suited for experienced reefers who can maintain stable alkalinity, calcium, and low nutrient levels.

Aquarium Care Requirements

Lighting: Purple Dragon SPS requires high-intensity lighting to thrive. Full-spectrum LEDs, metal halides, or T5/LED hybrid systems are ideal for bringing out their vivid purple and blue coloration.

Water Flow: This coral prefers strong, turbulent water flow to help prevent detritus buildup and encourage healthy polyp extension and growth.

Placement: It should be placed in the upper third of the tank, where it will receive the most light and flow. Ensure that you provide sufficient space for its branching growth pattern.

Feeding: While primarily photosynthetic, Purple Dragon SPS can benefit from occasional feedings of micro-plankton, amino acids, or other coral-specific supplements to boost colour and growth.

Aggression: It is semi-aggressive. Like most SPS corals, it may engage in chemical warfare or overgrow nearby corals, so spacing and placement are essential.

FAQ Section

Q: Is this coral suitable for beginners?
A:

A: No, the Purple Dragon SPS is not suitable for beginners. This coral is best suited for experienced reef keepers due to its specific care requirements, including high-intensity lighting, strong turbulent flow, and very stable water parameters (alkalinity, calcium, magnesium, and low nutrients). Inconsistent conditions can lead to tissue recession or loss of coloration. Beginners are encouraged to start with hardy soft corals or LPS before moving into SPS species like the Purple Dragon.
